All I asking for is my body

Who is Makot?  Do you feel sorry for him?  What are your thoughts about him and the way he copes with his parents?

Makoot is a boy who enjoys playing with younger kids.  He tends rule the pack of them by doing what older boys do his age.  He enjoys being the leader.  I really do feel sorry for him because he comes from a family with no values or morales.  When Kiyoshi tries to thank Makoto's mother for feeding him, she just laughs at him.  Makoto tells her to shut up and shoves her into the house.  Obviously, Makoto has no respect for his mother.  I think Kiyoshi's parents are right about not letting Kiyoshi hang out with Makoto.  Makoto's parents seem to be a little off.  There are scary people waiting outside of their house and Makoto's mom's reaction to saying "Thank you" is very bizaare.  I feel sorry for Makoto because he is probably very embarassed by his parents behavior.  My father was an alcoholic and I felt the same way about him.  I had no respect for him and was very embarassed by him.
The way Makoto deals with his parents by saying "shut up and get out of here" is very strange.  It's very disprespectful and it's almost as if he is acting as the parent.  As I stated before I have lived through this kind of life with an alcholic father.  I definitely acted as the parent but would be to terrified to tell him to shut up.  Makota was just a child himself and that was the only way he knew how to deal with his parents.

  1. Hi Dina,
Makot did like playing with kids younger then himself but I think it was because the younger kids had know idea what his parents did for a living. kids can be so cruel and the older ones in the story were. I think back on what Tosh said to his brother. "Because his father no work and his mother do all the work, thass why!". "He doan play with us because he scared". (4) I think the older boys were old enough to hear from the adults what Makot parents did for a living so they would have make fun of him. I agree with you that Makot must have been very embarrassed he knew what his mom did for a living that is why he never invited the kids over to the house when his parents were home. I have to say that feel sorry for Makot you can pick your friends but you can't pick your family. I so sorry to hear about your dad, but you are not alone there are many family out there that have to deal with the same thing. From the looks of your picture you have a wonderful family of your own and I sure that your children will never have to go through what you did. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hi Dina,

Your point about never telling your dad to shut up got me thinking about Makot's father. He doesn't seem to interact much with Makot. Perhaps, Makot's mother is more permissive with Makot? Or perhaps he learned to treat his mother based on the way his father treats her?

I love that you made a connection between your lived experience and Makot's; this helps you delve deeper into Makot's character, to analyze his experience and feelings, and to create meaning from the text.

    Thanks for your insights!

    Take care,
    Lauren

  3. Dina:
Nice job on including your similarities to Makot's really gave a good connection of your response. Observational learning takes place automatically, good or bad our parents are influential on us. We should be taught the bad behavior is not tolerated and good behavior is rewarded unfortunately this isn't occurring.
Thanks for the reading !! Daye

  4. Hello, I know Makot's parents seem unusual. They seem kind of scary also. Makot seems very independent. He always on his own, but one thing i dont like about him is how he bribes the younger boys. The town mentions him in a negative way. I believe that Makot is hiding something, his parents are also hiding something, but I can be wrong. It's too soon to make assumption. We just have to keep reading to find out more. I know that Makot's parents and him have a relationship that seems odd, and not close. I dont know the reason why for this, but I hope its not that serious.
Thanks, You have given me more to think about!

  5. Hello Dina!
I also noticed the way that Makot treated his mother and thought it was very inappropriate. The last scene of part one, shows a little of the relationship Makot has with his parents and there is definitely no respect involve in it. When the narrator thanks Makot’s mother for the food she seems acts very ignorant and rude, showing no education or manners. From that small scene of the book, I also got the idea that there is something off with the parents and I can’t wait to find out what is it!

  6. Hello Dina,
Yes, I was also confused at the way Makot treated his mother and told her to "shut up". That was never a thought in my mind growing up, it was an unspoken rule. Respect for my parents was a high morale taught to me as a young child. Even if my parents were in the wrong it was expected for me to always have respect no matter what. I do agree with you the this is the way Makot dealt with having these kinds of parents.

    Thanks for sharing,

  7. I'm not gonna lie, I have told my mom or dad to shut up I think a few times growing up not like seriously shut up but maybe once or twice. I think I got slapped for it a few time ha. But I agree it is very disrespectful to tell anyone to shut up not just your parents and he did it maybe because the way they treated him. I don't remember if they treated him bad or not I don't think they did but for some reason Makot treats them differently. So I agree there is something about Makots parents and hopefully it's in part 2 because now i"m curious as to what it is

  8. I completely agree with you on how it is completely disrespectful for Makot. He tries to buy his friend ships and is completely disrespectful to his mother and father. I have a feeling though as the book goes on things will change for Makot and he will learn to be less disrespectful and more caring. But i am very interested to see what happens next in part II. Thank you for the insights.
