Happy Endings, "Obituary," and "Oompah Loompah" Dialogue

What is the significance of Shirley Temple?  What meaning does she hold for Lovey?

Every Sunday morning Jerry would come over to Lovey's house to watch the beinning of Shirley Temple movies.  They always had to leave in the middle of the show to go to Sunday school.  So, since they couldn't watch the endings of the movies, they would make up happy endings during the Church service.
I believe that Lovey didn't have a lot of happiness in her life and that is why she would make up happy endings to stories all time.  I think that Jerry was such a good friend he went along with it for Lovey's benefit.  Lovey admired Shirley Temple.  Lovey was inspired by Shirley Temple because she had all the happiness that Lovey was missing in her life.  She was cute, important, special and most of all very loved.  Lovey lived her life in ferry tales through Shirley Temples movies.  Shirley Temple was a great role model for Lovey.  It also seems as if Jerry was the only other person in Lovey's life to make her happy.  Lovey and Jerry have a heartwarming friendship that will last a lifetime.

  1. Hi Dina,

I like your focus on the relationship between Jerry and Lovey; their kinship helps both through difficult experiences and they comfort each other when no one else seems to understand.

I agree that Lovey and Jerry look to Shirley Temple and fantasize. She represents all that they lack and desire. I wonder if Shirley Temple has a positive or negative affect on them. What do you all think?

    Thanks for your insights.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  2. Hello, I like how you mentioned the things that inspired lovey and how it made an impacted in her life. You put it in good detailed and it helped me understand her story better. I too believe lovey was a girl who had something missing in her life and Shirley help her get through it. It's actually fun to read, or maybe picture how jeremy and Lovey made up their own happy endings.. Thanks, I Like reading your insights.

    Thanks, Lesley

  3. I don't think Lovey was very happy either. She seemed kind of like she wanted a better life and how she was jealous of other people and their lives. And I think that she really did admire Shirley and her movies and wanted to be like and how they would go to church and finish their own happy endings. Maybe those are the kind of things she wanted for her life and couldn't have so she made them up with Jerry, who was also very supportive of her.

  4. Hi Dina,
I was so happy that Lovey had Jerry for a friend. That fact that he was a boy was even neater. I loved how the two of them would get together and made up the ending as if they wish it would have happen in their own lives.
I too agree that Lovey must have come from a very unhappy home. I think that when we are going through something bad that the movies are place where we can all escape. I believe that is just what took place with Lovey she had such a hard time in her own life that the Shirley Temple movies were away for her to get lost. It also gave her an opportunity to dream and in this dream, she was beautiful and loved. I wonder how many of us when we were little wished we were someone else. I know that I use to go to the movies and wish I were the leading actress just so I could escape. We all need that from time to time an some more than others.

  5. Hi Dina-

I agree with your post. I wrote about the same thing, and are posts are similar. I think that Lovey lived through Shirley and she admired her as well. Crazy how as kids we look up to TV shows and wish that we had there life when really there just acting. I think that her friend Jerry went along with writing the endings to the stories because he knew how happy it made Lovey. Also maybe Lovey did not come from a home that was to loving, so therefore this is what made her want to have Shirleys happy endings.

Thanks for the post, I enjoyed reading it!!

  6. I really liked how you drew us to the relationship between Lovey and Jerry her relationship with Jerry is wonderfully imbued with a strong sense of what friendship is. As in reality, sometimes the two can't stand one another. They fight and get jealous of one another, but in the end, they always end up together. Truly wonderful.

  7. Hello Dina,

I am glad that you pointed out the relationship between Lovey and Jerry. This seemed to be her only sense of closeness and happiness in her life. Jerry was a true companion to Lovey, someone she could count on and lean on in her tough struggles. It is so true that Lovey was missing happiness in her life, hence, the need to create happy endings to stories.

  8. Hello Dina!
I also believe that Lovey didn’t have a happy childhood and that is why she used to create stories and happy endings. She was at an age where is difficult to comprehend that movies are not real life. Shirley’s life wasn’t really perfect; she was just getting paid to act. However, I do think that Shirley had a positive impact in Lovey’s life, making her want to achieve happiness and bringing her joy in difficult times. In one of your comments Hailey mentions that Lovey was jealous of other peoples life, I don’t think that she was jealous because she clearly mentions that she is not good enough for that.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Natalia

  9. That is great you made the connection that Shirley Temple is the happiness that Lovey is missing in her own life. That never made it into my mind while reading. Now that you mention it I can see why Lovey would look to Shirley Temple and fantasize. Everyone has something to help them escape their troubles for awhile. This helps people through hard times like Lovey always being made fun of at school and at home.

  10. I agree with you insight about how lovey did not have a happy life and used shirley Temples to bring happiness and joy towards hers. There is not much to say about response because you included everything. The relationship between Lovey and Jerry, how Lovey created her own endings to cope with the her own life and how she wanted everything to be perfect. Even though Lovey and Jerry's relationship has its ups and downs, in the end it is a relationship that will continue to grow and thats all you can ask for. I am really glad that you pointed this out in your response. Everyone experiences a life time relationship, and Lovey had this with jerry even when her life wasnt the greatest.
